Iran Successfully Deploys New Research Satellite Chamran-1 into Orbit

Iran has launched a new research satellite named Chamran-1, weighing 60kg, into orbit as part of its aerospace program, despite objections from Western countries that the technology could be used for ballistic missiles. The satellite, launched by the Ghaem-100 carrier, aims to test hardware and software systems for demonstrating orbital manoeuvring technology. Western governments have expressed concerns that the technology used for satellite launches could also be utilized for nuclear weapons delivery systems. Iran maintains that its launches are for civilian or defense purposes only.

Iran has been advancing its aerospace activities, claiming they are peaceful and comply with UN Security Council resolutions. However, the country has faced setbacks with some satellites exploding during launch. In January, the Sorayya satellite was launched into a 750km orbit, the highest by Iran to date. In February, Russia launched an Iranian satellite, prompting backlash from the US. Despite facing Western sanctions, Iran has carried out a dozen satellite launches over the past two years.

The satellite launch comes amid accusations from the US and European countries that Iran is transferring ballistic missiles to Russia for potential use in Ukraine, which Iran has denied. The country’s aerospace advancements have attracted scrutiny and criticism from Western nations, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Iran and the West. Despite international concerns, Iran continues to progress its aerospace program and defend its activities as peaceful and compliant with international regulations.
