In an effort to drive Hezbollah away from the border, Israel has expanded its bombardment in Lebanon, targeting both Hezbollah and Hamas fighters. Powerful explosions were reported in Beirut’s southern suburbs, as well as in a Palestinian refugee camp in the north. The Israeli military confirmed striking targets near Beirut and stated that they had killed 440 Hezbollah militants since the start of the ground operation. Additionally, a 250-meter long tunnel intended for infiltrating Israeli territory was found and dismantled in southern Lebanon.
Israeli strikes on Saturday targeted various locations, including a building near Lebanon’s only international airport and a former Al-Manar broadcaster site. Hezbollah claimed to have successfully targeted a group of Israeli soldiers in northern Israel, while Israel made no statement regarding this alleged attack. An official with Hamas’ military wing, along with his family, was killed in an attack on the Beddawi camp.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in at least 1,400 Lebanese casualties and 1.2 million displaced individuals in less than two weeks. Israel aims to push Hezbollah away from the border so that displaced Israelis can return home. The conflict erupted following Hamas’ incursion into Israel on October 7, with Hezbollah showing support by launching rockets into Israel. The two sides have been engaged in almost daily fire exchanges, with Israel conducting a limited ground operation in southern Lebanon last week after the killing of prominent Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
