Press Release: Exciting Opening Day at 2024 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship
FOLEY, Ala. – The inaugural day of the 2024 Sun Belt Volleyball Championship witnessed thrilling matchups as Coastal Carolina and Georgia State secured victories, advancing to the quarterfinals.
In the first match, Georgia State (5E) battled Troy (4W) to a gripping five-set finish, claiming victory with a score of 3-2. The Panthers showcased their dominance at the net, recording a remarkable 15 blocks. After losing the first set 27-25, Georgia State rallied to take the second set 25-23, driven by a 9-1 scoring run. Although Troy fought back, winning the fourth set 25-16, Georgia State seized control in the final set, finishing on a 4-1 run. Tori Hester led the Trojans with 28 kills, marking her 49th consecutive match with double-digit kills, while Georgia State’s Peyton Gash topped her team with 15 kills.
In the second match, (4E) Coastal Carolina triumphed over (5W) Southern Miss, winning in four sets (3-1). The Chanticleers’ Jalyn Stout achieved her NCAA-record 19th triple-double of the season, contributing 20 kills, 22 assists, and 14 digs. Coastal Carolina set the pace early, winning the first two sets 25-21 before Southern Miss rallied in the third. The Chanticleers decisively claimed the fourth set 25-14, featuring a .577 hitting percentage. Coastal Carolina will face Arkansas State in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinals are set to commence on Friday, November 22, starting with Texas State vs. James Madison at 11 a.m. CT, followed by Georgia State taking on App State at 1:30 p.m. and Coastal Carolina against Arkansas State at 4:30 p.m.
