TikTok’s parent company fires intern for intentionally disrupting its AI technology

The parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, has dismissed an intern for “maliciously interfering” with its artificial intelligence technology effort. The intern’s actions affected the company’s AI training program, although it is not clear which aspect of the AI model was interfered with. ByteDance denied reports that it faced significant financial losses due to the intern’s actions and stated that no commercial projects or online operations were affected. TikTok’s algorithm, powered by AI processes, is a key element of the app’s success. Despite threats of a ban in the U.S., ByteDance has taken legal action to challenge it, and both Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have signaled a softer stance toward the ban effort. Trump, who originally supported a ban, now believes it would benefit Facebook instead. Harris, who has used TikTok during her campaign, has called for a change in ownership rather than an outright ban. TikTok remains one of the most popular apps globally, with ByteDance’s AI chatbot Doubao being China’s most popular AI chatbot, similar to ChatGPT.
