Georgia State Falls to Marshall in Thrilling Ten-Inning Showdown
ATLANTA – In a nail-biting contest held at GSU Baseball Complex, Georgia State University’s baseball team narrowly lost to Marshall 15-14 in ten innings on Friday night, overcoming a seven-run deficit to take a brief lead before ultimately succumbing.
The standout players for the Panthers included Kaleb Freeman, who went 3-for-4, smashing a solo home run and driving in three runs. His performance not only helped spark a significant rally in the fifth inning but also set a new single-season record for Georgia State with 25 doubles. Wills Maginnis also made his mark, hitting 3-for-6 with one RBI, while his brother Michael contributed with two hits and three RBI’s.
Georgia State (24-27, 9-16 SBC) found themselves trailing 9-2 in the fifth inning. However, they showcased their resilience by scoring seven runs on six hits, capitalizing on three errors by the Thundering Herd to tie the game at 9-9. Marshall (26-24, 11-14 SBC) responded quickly, regaining a 12-9 lead in the sixth.
As the game progressed, the Panthers took charge in the eighth inning, scoring five runs to momentarily lead 14-12. A series of clutch hits and an error by Marshall’s defense allowed Georgia State to surge ahead. However, the Thundering Herd rallied in the ninth and reclaimed the lead with a solo home run by Maika Niu in the tenth, sealing the win.
Due to weather conditions, Game Two of the series is rescheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m., where 14 Panther seniors will be honored before the game. Fans are encouraged to tune in through ESPN+ or WGTJ-FM 97.5 for the action.
