Keisha Lance Bottoms Forms Exploratory Committee for Governor Run
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has officially announced the formation of an exploratory committee as she considers a run for governor in 2026. “I am honored by the encouragement I have received as I considered running for governor,” Bottoms stated in a release on Monday.
Bottoms, who was elected as Atlanta’s mayor in 2017 and chose not to seek reelection in 2021, has transitioned into a role as a senior advisor in President Joe Biden’s administration. Her decision to leave the mayoral office came amid speculation regarding her future political aspirations, particularly following reports that she had been let go by former President Donald Trump—an assertion Bottoms refuted, clarifying that she could not be fired from a position she had already resigned.
In her gubernatorial bid, Bottoms joins state Senator Jason Esteves, who is also vying for the Democratic nomination. Notably, former Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, who has run for governor twice previously, is reportedly contemplating a third campaign for the state’s highest office.
On the Republican side, the only declared candidate so far is state Attorney General Chris Carr, with other potential contenders including Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, as the race to succeed current Governor Brian Kemp heats up.
Bottoms expressed excitement about this new chapter in her political journey and indicated that she will make a formal announcement regarding her candidacy soon.
