Recent research has unveiled that wild chimpanzees engage in self-medication and exhibit altruistic behaviors, providing insights into the origins of medical care in humans. Documented in a study published in Frontiers in Evolution and Ecology, the findings are based on historical data and eight months of new observations, including video evidence. Chimpanzees demonstrate the ability to chew and apply plants as poultices for their wounds, clean others’ injuries by licking, and use leaves for hygiene after mating or defecation. The study revealed instances of communal care, highlighting that non-related chimps also assist one another, challenging the notion that altruism is unique to humans.
Elodie Freymann, the researcher leading the study, emphasizes that these behaviors suggest a shared ancestral capability for medical care, predating the emergence of humans. The evidence indicates that other animal species, like elephants, also practice forms of self-medication, further reflecting a broader animal instinct to address health needs.
The study observed 41 instances of wound care among chimpanzees in Uganda, documenting both self-care and care for others, including non-kin. This suggests that prosocial behaviors may be more widespread in primates than previously believed. The behaviors were recorded during physically demanding fieldwork, where Freymann monitored chimps’ interactions and health over extensive periods.
Overall, these findings underscore the importance of conserving forest ecosystems, as they serve as vital resources for chimpanzees.
