Governor Kemp Signs Key Legislation to Strengthen Georgia’s Workforce
ATLANTA – On May 12, Governor Brian P. Kemp signed four pivotal bills aimed at enhancing Georgia’s workforce, expanding opportunities, and supporting students and families. Joined by Speaker Jon Burns and members of the Georgia General Assembly, Kemp emphasized the need to align the state’s education system with the demands of today’s job market.
The legislation includes the Top State for Talent Act (HB 192), which codifies the Georgia MATCH program, reflecting the efforts of the Governor’s Workforce Strategy Team to connect education with business needs. Sponsored by Rep. Matthew Gambill and Senator Drew Echols, this act aims to solidify Georgia’s reputation as a top state for nurturing talent.
Additionally, the College Completion Grant Extension (HB 38) has been authorized to prolong its benefits until 2029 while lowering completion thresholds. This change will enhance accessibility for students within the University System of Georgia and Technical College System, ensuring that more students can graduate and join the workforce.
The Rural Veterinary Loan Program Update (HB 172) was also established, increasing the loan cap for veterinarians specializing in food animal care from $80,000 spread over four years to $90,000 over three years. This adjustment aims to attract veterinary professionals to underserved rural areas.
Lastly, the Georgia Foster Care Scholarship Program (SB 85) was introduced to aid eligible foster and former foster youths, providing up to $30,000 annually for postsecondary education, after accounting for other financial options.
Governor Kemp expressed gratitude to all sponsors and stakeholders involved in bringing these vital policies to fruition, reinforcing Georgia’s commitment to a thriving future workforce.
