Poll Reveals Widespread Distrust in Federal Health Agencies Amid Partisan Divides
Washington, D.C. — A recent poll by KFF indicates troubling levels of distrust in federal health agencies amongst Americans. The survey, conducted with 1,380 adults between April 8-15, shows only 46% of respondents have confidence in federal agencies to ensure the safety and efficacy of prescription drugs. Trust is even lower for vaccines, with just 45% expressing faith in their safety and effectiveness, while only 42% believe federal agencies can adequately respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
Drew Altman, President and CEO of KFF, highlighted that these low confidence levels pose a significant risk for public health, especially as the nation navigates potential future pandemics. The survey highlighted that only 32% of participants felt federal health agencies operate independently and free of external influences.
Party affiliation significantly influences perceptions of these agencies. While trust among Democrats for the FDA has plummeted from 86% to 67%, Republicans have shown an increase in confidence from 42% to 52%. A similar trend is observed with the CDC, where Democratic trust has decreased from 88% to 70%, while Republican confidence climbed from 40% to 51%.
Amid this distrust in federal agencies, local healthcare providers stand out as trusted sources. A striking 82% of respondents trust their doctors for reliable vaccine information, and 81% have confidence in their child’s pediatrician. Meanwhile, only 41% believe Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. offers reliable vaccine advice, and even fewer trust former President Donald Trump.
Despite these concerns, a majority of those surveyed maintain confidence in the safety of specific vaccines, with 83% affirming the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine and 56% for COVID-19. The poll carries a margin of error of ±3 percentage points, underscoring the nuanced public perception of health agencies in today’s divided political climate.
