Press Release

Capitol Hill Moves Forward with GOP Reconciliation Package

March 14, 2024 — Washington, D.C. — In a significant legislative step, three U.S. House committees approved several initial bills integral to the Republicans’ extensive reconciliation package on Tuesday. The Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Education and Workforce committees each voted predominantly along party lines, advancing their proposals to the Budget Committee for consolidation into a comprehensive package.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) aims to secure a floor vote on the finalized 11-bill package before the Memorial Day recess. With 220 GOP members in the chamber, unanimous support will be necessary for the package to advance to the Senate.

The approved measures include a substantial $150 billion boost in defense spending, a $70 billion increase for border security, and a revamp of federal student loan and Pell grant systems. Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green (R-Tenn.) expressed that the funding will equip Border Patrol with essential tools to enhance community safety, contrasting GOP priorities with Democratic "open-borders" policies.

Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) touted the potential to save taxpayers over $350 billion while addressing critical reforms in loan repayment and accountability. The committee voted 21-14 along party lines in favor of these reforms.

Additionally, House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) stated that the defense funding increase is crucial for maintaining national strength and agility. This committee’s vote was 35-21, with bipartisan support from five Democrats.

Upcoming committee sessions will outline plans to extend the 2017 GOP tax law and propose cuts to Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding. The Republican strategy aims to reshape government spending while generating extensive reforms across critical sectors.
