On Sunday night, a collision occurred between a boat and the Clearwater Ferry in Florida, resulting in multiple injuries among the ferry’s passengers. Over 40 individuals were aboard when the incident took place, and the offending boat reportedly fled the scene. Following the crash, the ferry came to rest on a sandbar beneath the Memorial Causeway bridge. Clearwater Police indicated that the boat responsible for the collision may have been located by law enforcement.
Authorities quickly removed all passengers from the ferry. Although the exact number of injuries is still being assessed, police confirmed that all injured were ferry passengers, with two sustaining serious injuries that required helicopter transport to local hospitals. Given the extent of injuries, the Clearwater Fire Department classified it as a “mass casualty incident,” noting six trauma alerts were issued.
Clearwater Police spokesperson Rob Shaw stated that efforts are ongoing to ensure all individuals from the ferry are accounted for, but he believes everyone has been rescued. The investigation into the crash is being led by the Clearwater Police Department, with support from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard, which is also present at the scene. A representative from Clearwater Ferry acknowledged the accident but refrained from providing further details due to the ongoing investigation.
Clearwater is located about 23 miles northwest of St. Petersburg. Authorities are continuing to gather information and assess the situation surrounding the incident.
