Georgia State Panthers Fall to Coastal Carolina in High-Scoring Showdown
ATLANTA – In a thrilling matchup at the GSU Baseball Complex, the Georgia State Panthers were outgunned by the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, losing 14-8 on Saturday afternoon. This game saw the Panthers, now with a record of 22-15 overall and 8-6 in Sun Belt play, struggle to maintain pace against a potent Coastal offense, which improved to 26-9 overall and 10-4 in the conference.
The Chanticleers jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the second inning. The Panthers responded promptly with an RBI single from Jesse Donohoe, cutting the lead to 2-1. However, Coastal Carolina continued to apply pressure, scoring in each of the following four innings and building a significant 13-5 lead by the fourth inning, highlighted by a five-run rally.
Despite the challenging outing, Georgia State showed resilience at the plate. Colin Hynek and Michael Maginnis both hit solo home runs, while Donohoe led the charge with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the eighth inning. Other contributors included Jae Williams, Cooper Milford, and Kaleb Freeman, each adding doubles.
On the pitching front, the Panthers faced struggles, yielding 14 runs on 10 hits and issuing 14 walks. Jake Hembree was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs over 3.2 innings. Coastal’s Darin Horn secured the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings and striking out three.
The Panthers will seek redemption in Sunday’s series finale, also set for 1:00 PM, at home. Additionally, Wills Maginnis made history by setting a new Georgia State single-season record with his 17th hit-by-pitch during the game.
This loss underscores the need for Georgia State to tighten its pitching as they head into a crucial final game against Coastal Carolina.
