Hundreds of potential jurors in New York are preparing to complete questionnaires ahead of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ impending sex trafficking trial, which is set to start on May 12. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian, overseeing the case, will lead jury selection, where Combs faces charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution and Combs’ legal team submitted competing questionnaires, causing tension between the parties. Prosecutors criticized Combs’ proposed 72-question survey for being too extensive and personal, particularly regarding sensitive topics like sexual assault and domestic violence. Combs’ attorney, Mark Agnifilo, contended that jurors should have the option to disclose such information either in writing or verbally.
As a compromise, the prosecution suggested including an option for jurors to indicate their preference for discussing sensitive topics. The finalized questionnaire remains confidential. Twelve jurors and six alternates will be selected, and once the questionnaires are processed, they will be shared with both legal teams.
Inquiries are set to focus on potential jurors’ biases and their knowledge of the case, which alleges Combs coerced women into orchestrated drug-fueled sexual encounters known as “freak offs.” Key witness Casandra Ventura, who previously accused Combs of abuse, is expected to play a significant role in the trial.
A notable point of controversy is a video showing Combs assaulting Ventura, which has been ruled admissible by the judge, despite the defense’s attempts to exclude it. Legal experts suggest that this visual evidence may significantly impact public perception and the jury’s decision-making. The trial could extend over eight to ten weeks, exploring extensive and potentially damaging claims against Combs.
