A suspect arrested for stealing Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse is in the U.S. illegally, according to U.S. Attorney Ed Martin. He mentioned that another suspect, also illegal, is being sought by law enforcement. Martin clarified that the theft was not targeted at Noem specifically due to her role in the Department of Homeland Security, stating it was merely a case of a thief attracted to her “nice looking purse.”
The incident occurred at Capital Burger, a Washington D.C. restaurant, where a masked man walked past two plainclothes Secret Service agents sitting at the bar, sat near Noem, and used his foot to discreetly drag her purse towards him. He then swiftly took the purse, which contained $3,000 in cash, Noem’s DHS access badge, passport, credit cards, blank checks, keys, and her driver’s license, before leaving the establishment.
Martin noted that the suspect displayed experience and knowledge in executing the theft, with evidence of careful scouting beforehand. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now involved, following President Trump’s directive to prosecute and deport undocumented individuals involved in crimes. Martin asserted that the suspect would not be back on the streets of America.
The U.S. Secret Service, which provides protection for Noem, declined to comment on the incident’s details. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the Secret Service. When approached for comments, Noem refrained from discussing specifics, mentioning that the situation is not yet resolved.
