Georgian U.S. citizen, arrested under Florida’s new anti-immigration law, released from jail

Juan Carlos Lopez-Gomez was released from the Leon County Jail after more than 24 hours in custody following a traffic stop. The U.S. citizen, born in Georgia, was taken to a Wendy’s where he reunited with his mother. Lopez-Gomez was arrested for illegally entering Florida as an “unauthorized alien” after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper pulled over the car he was in for speeding. Despite showing his Social Security card and Georgia state ID, he was taken into custody.

His mother expressed concern about their future as a family and worries about deportation despite her children being born in the U.S. She plans to take legal action over her son’s arrest. Lopez-Gomez’s court appearance ended with a judge finding no probable cause for the charges.

He was greeted outside the jail by protesters demanding his release, as he will have to return to court on May 6. He was charged under a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, which was temporarily blocked by a federal judge. The law makes it a misdemeanor for undocumented immigrants over 18 to enter Florida without inspection by immigration officers.

Lopez-Gomez’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by U.S. citizens wrongly accused of immigration violations. It also highlights the ongoing debate surrounding immigration laws and their enforcement.
