The recent overhaul of the Georgia 400 interchange at Interstate 285 is showing positive results, according to Georgia Commissioner of Transportation Russell McMurry. The interchange has moved down the rankings of the nation’s worst freight traffic bottlenecks from ninth to 29th, with peak-hour speeds increasing by 12 miles per hour. The Georgia Department of Transportation has been working on improving major highway corridors across the state since 2016. The Georgia 400/I-285 overhaul is the first to be completed, with ongoing work to add toll lanes in Fulton and Forsyth counties.
McMurry also mentioned that improvements are underway at the I-20/I-285 interchange east of Atlanta and construction is about to begin on the I-20/I-285 interchange west of Atlanta. Additionally, the DOT is converting reversible toll lanes along I-75 south of Atlanta into non-reversible lanes. McMurry emphasized that these improvements take time but the department is working towards solutions.
