Governor Kemp signs the biggest state income tax cut ever in Georgia

ATLANTA, Ga. – Governor Brian Kemp signed two bills on Tuesday that will deliver over $1 billion in tax cuts and relief to Georgia taxpayers. The first bill, HB 111, accelerates the state’s largest income tax cut in history, reducing the flat income tax rate to 5.19% with further reductions planned in the coming years. This measure is expected to save Georgia taxpayers approximately $880 million this year. The second bill, HB 112, authorizes one-time special tax refunds of up to $500 to Georgia taxpayer households for the 2023 and 2024 taxable years.

The signing ceremony, held at a Cobb County Chamber of Commerce event, was attended by state lawmakers, local leaders, and the First Lady Marty Kemp. Governor Kemp emphasized that the funds belong to the taxpayers and should be returned to them, especially during a time of high costs.

Critics of the bills argue that the surplus should be used to bolster assistance programs rather than provide tax cuts. Kemp, who is nearing the end of his second term, faces an uncertain future in politics. With the governor’s race wide open in 2026, potential candidates from both parties are lining up to run for the office.

Despite rumors of challenging U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff’s reelection bid in 2026, Kemp has not announced his future plans. Atlanta News First and Atlanta News First+ continue to provide updates on Georgia’s political landscape through their news app and podcasts.
