Citizen ordered to leave U.S. in 7 days claims no contact from federal officials

Nicole Micheroni, a U.S. citizen and immigration attorney residing in Massachusetts, received a notice from the Department of Homeland Security to leave the country within seven days. The email, sent from a no-reply address, stated that her parole, which allows non-citizens to enter or remain in the U.S. for limited periods, had been terminated. Micheroni was alarmed by the lack of personal information in the email and initially thought it was a joke. Another immigration attorney, Carmen Bello, also received a similar notice. The Department of Homeland Security explained that Customs and Border Protection is issuing these notices to individuals without lawful status in the U.S., using known email addresses which may lead to unintended recipients like Micheroni and Bello. Both attorneys criticized the lack of responsibility in sending such notices without verifying the recipients’ identities. Micheroni stated that she has not received any further communication from DHS or clarification on the situation, leading her to believe that it was a mistake. The process has been described as chaotic and imperfect by Micheroni, who believes that DHS needs to be more careful in handling such important matters. The department did not respond to inquiries for comment but assured that they are monitoring communications and addressing issues on a case-by-case basis.
