Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College Consolidation Approved by Board of Regents

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has approved the consolidation of East Georgia State College (EGSC) and Georgia Southern University, marking the sixth round of consolidation within USG. The move is aimed at improving student success, expanding access to high-skilled degree programs, and increasing efficiency in the use of public resources. The consolidation process is expected to take over a year and is contingent upon approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

This initiative aligns with USG’s guiding principles for consolidation, which include enhancing education attainment levels, improving accessibility, avoiding program duplication, achieving economies of scale, enhancing economic development, and streamlining administrative services. The consolidation is expected to lead to improved student services, faculty hiring, and academic programs on campus.

The new institution will retain the identity of EGSC while becoming a part of Georgia Southern University under the leadership of President Kyle Marrero. An implementation team will be formed to work out the details associated with the consolidation and prepare necessary documentation for SACSCOC approval. Campus and community listening sessions will be held to gather input on designing the new institution to best serve its region and the state.

The consolidation of Georgia Southern and EGSC is part of USG’s ongoing effort to prioritize efficiency, control costs, and maintain high teaching standards. It follows previous consolidations that resulted in administrative savings, improved retention and graduation rates, and enhanced student success.
