Georgia Republicans advocate for legislation inspired by DOGE

Legislative proposals dealing with school zone speed cameras failed at the Georgia capitol earlier this year, with one aimed at reforming them and another at barring them. However, a new bill, Senate Bill 28 (SB28), is being considered by Georgia lawmakers. This proposal would require state agencies to review their rules and regulations every four years to identify cost-cutting opportunities. It would also mandate reports on how proposed laws could impact small businesses and assess the economic effects of new regulations.

SB28’s primary sponsor, Senate Majority Leader Steve Gooch, aims to replicate the federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at the state level, an initiative that claims to have saved over $1 billion in federal spending. However, DOGE has faced criticism and lawsuits since its launch on Jan. 20. Some Democratic lawmakers in Georgia are hesitant to support SB28 without more information on Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’s plan for government spending and efficiency.

If passed, SB28 would initiate the first regulatory review under the new system in four years for Georgia agencies. The bill has the backing of Lt. Gov. Jones, who is said to be considering a gubernatorial run next year. The outcome of this legislation could have significant implications for state regulations and fiscal responsibility in Georgia.
