Hundreds of thousands of Gaza City residents have lost their main source of clean water after supplies from Israel’s water utility were cut due to the Israeli army’s offensive. Israel’s bombardment and ground offensive in Gaza City’s Shejaia neighborhood damaged the pipeline operated by Mekorot, leaving residents with limited access to clean water. Most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been internally displaced by the war, with residents forced to queue for hours to fill up containers with water. The Coastal Aquifer Basin, the region’s only natural source of water, is severely depleted and contaminated, rendering much of it unfit for human consumption.
The Palestinian Water Authority has reported that more than 85% of water and sanitation facilities in Gaza are out of service, leading to a drastic decline in water supply rates. Desalination plants have also been damaged or stopped operations due to power and fuel cuts by Israel.
This water crisis has left residents struggling to meet their basic water needs for drinking, cooking, and washing. The lack of access to clean water poses severe health risks and highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
