U.S. requests extension to gather information on Maryland man mistakenly deported

A federal judge in Maryland expressed concern over the Trump administration’s lack of action to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a man mistakenly deported to El Salvador last month. The judge requested information on Abrego Garcia’s whereabouts and what steps had been taken to bring him back. Despite the judge’s deadline, the government attorney couldn’t provide concrete information, causing the judge to question whether anything had been done.

The Supreme Court had ordered the administration to bring Abrego Garcia back, but the government attorney stated they didn’t have evidence contradicting the belief that he was still in El Salvador. The judge found this troubling and criticized the lack of action from the administration. The court also rejected the administration’s emergency appeal, siding with the district judge in ordering Abrego Garcia’s return.

The administration claims Abrego Garcia is a member of the MS-13 gang, but he has never been convicted of a crime. His wife described the situation as an emotional rollercoaster for their family. The judge’s previous order deemed the government’s actions as “wholly lawless” and lacking evidence to support allegations against Abrego Garcia.

Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old with legal permission to work in the U.S., was detained and deported despite having ties to the country, including a wife who is a U.S. citizen. The administration admitted to making a mistake but argued they couldn’t rectify it. Despite the Supreme Court’s decision, the administration is facing criticism for its handling of the situation.
