Event in Brownsville ISD highlights the importance of using locally sourced ingredients to prepare homemade dishes

Brownsville ISD’s Food and Nutrition Services department highlighted its scratch cooking initiative at an annual food show, showcasing locally sourced menu items that garnered positive reviews from students. This initiative was made possible by a grant from the Chef Ann Foundation in 2023.

The FNS Food Show, typically held at the Brownsville Event Center, was moved to the CAB Cafeteria this year. Vendors showcased non-locally sourced menu options, while local farms like Terra Preta Farms and OBST Family Farm served dishes like chicken pozole and watermelon slices.

Jackie Cruz, the director of Food and Nutrition Services, emphasized the department’s shift towards fresh-cooked items and sourcing food from local growers, thanks to the Chef Ann grant. This focus on scratch cooking aims to promote healthier eating habits among students.

Following the food tasting, students participated in various physical fitness activities at the BISD Wellness Gym across the street. Superintendent Jesus H. Chavez highlighted the event’s two-pronged approach to promoting healthy living and lifestyles.

The success of this year’s food show underscores BISD’s commitment to providing nutritious, locally sourced meals to students while encouraging physical activity. This initiative not only benefits students’ health but also supports local farmers and promotes sustainable food practices within the school district.
