Australian woman Joanna Kathlyn Kinman narrowly avoided jail on Monday after plans to sell two human toes regurgitated by dogs at the animal shelter where she worked surfaced. The dogs had eaten parts of their deceased owner’s body, and Kinman took the toes home, believing she could make money by selling them online. When police found out, Kinman showed them various other items, including an alligator claw and her children’s teeth. She was an active member of a Facebook group trading specimens. Kinman pleaded guilty to offensive conduct involving human remains, facing a maximum of two years in prison. The magistrate sentenced her to an 18-month non-custodial sentence and 150 hours of community service, narrowly avoiding jail. Her lawyer stated that she regretted her actions, had lost her job, and faced public shaming. Kinman did not respond to questions from the media outside the court. The magistrate described her actions as “astounding” and “entirely odd,” while acknowledging that she would not be going to jail that day.
