Georgia Seeks to Recover Territory on the Tennessee Border

Georgia lawmakers are once again pushing to adjust the state’s northern border with Tennessee, citing a surveying error made over 200 years ago. The resolution aims to establish a commission to work with Congress to move the border, granting Georgia access to the Tennessee River. Rep. Martin Momtahan, a Republican leading the effort, argues that the current border does not align with the 35th parallel as intended by Congress in 1818.

However, Tennessee leaders have shown little interest in ceding the land, with former Governor Bill Haslam jokingly dismissing the idea. Momtahan remains optimistic despite skepticism from some lawmakers, pointing to recent geopolitical trends that have renewed interest in border disputes. President Trump’s desire to acquire new territory adds weight to the argument for adjusting the border.

The proposal has not yet advanced in the Georgia legislature but remains under discussion for future sessions. Lawmakers continue to debate the issue that has persisted for centuries, with Georgia still aiming to reclaim the land that they believe rightfully belongs to them.
