Venomous snake discovered in bananas at New Hampshire supermarket

A bunch of bananas at a New Hampshire grocery store contained a 1.5-foot-long snake, an Ornate cat-eyed snake native to Ecuador. Employees at Market Basket in Manchester found the snake nestled among the bananas and contacted the New Hampshire Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division. The snake was unharmed and has since been rehomed with Rainforest Reptile Shows Inc., an educational organization specializing in exotic animal care. The vice president of Rainforest Reptile Shows Inc. assured consumers that snakes in shipments are relatively uncommon and not something to be concerned about. The snake is a venomous species, so precautions are being taken for its care. Rainforest Reptile Inc. plans to post a video on their social media accounts to update the public on the snake’s well-being and allow them to vote on its name. The company thanked officials for their assistance in transitioning the snake to its new home. The Cat-eyed Snake primarily feeds on amphibians and lizards and requires special care due to its nocturnal nature. The encounter with the snake was described as a surprise and a unique experience by NH Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division officer Lt. Adam Cheney, who had never seen this species in his 25 years of experience.
