Jack LaSota, the leader of a cult-like group linked to multiple killings, including the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol officer in Vermont, was arrested in Maryland on charges of trespassing, obstructing, and firearms possession. LaSota, along with two associates, Michelle Zajko and Daniel Blank, were taken into custody in Frostburg, Maryland. The state police are working with federal law enforcement on an ongoing investigation.
LaSota, who was believed to have died in a boating accident, and her associates have been linked to various violent attacks, including the killing of an 80-year-old man and the shooting deaths of Michelle Zajko’s parents. Zajko was initially taken into custody in connection with her parents’ deaths, but has not been charged.
One of LaSota’s followers, Ophelia Bauckholt, was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire with Border Patrol agents in Vermont, resulting in the death of agent David Maland. Teresa Youngblut, who was with Bauckholt during the shooting, has pleaded not guilty to firearms charges.
Federal authorities have issued an alert seeking information on purchases made by Michelle Zajko, who is considered a person of interest in Agent Maland’s fatal shooting. The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. LaSota had previously been charged with obstructing the investigation into the deaths of Zajko’s parents, but was released on bail after failing to appear in court.
