KSU Outlasts Georgia State in Competitive Rivalry Showdown
Kennesaw State University (KSU) emerged victorious against Georgia State University (GSU) in a thrilling matchup that showcased the intensity of their newly established rivalry. KSU head coach Antoine Pettway expressed enthusiasm for the annual contest, highlighting Georgia State’s rising program under coach Jonas Hayes. "It’s great for the state, and it will be competitive every time," Pettway noted, praising Hayes as one of the NCAA’s best emerging coaches.
The Panthers surged early, establishing a 17-6 lead fueled by three consecutive three-pointers. Despite this early setback, KSU managed to regain a slim lead late in the first half, before entering halftime in a tight contest. Caution was required against Georgia State’s offensive prowess, but KSU displayed resilience, outscoring the Panthers 45-38 in the second half.
KSU freshman guard Adrian Wooley played a pivotal role, scoring a career-high 28 points and draining a crucial three-pointer that put KSU ahead 71-70 with just over four minutes left. Wooley credited his success to coach Pettway’s encouragement to be aggressive.
As the game progressed, KSU faced challenges, failing to secure a field goal in the final minutes. However, the Owls maintained composure, hitting all eight free throw attempts down the stretch. The game featured a captivating mix of six ties and eight lead changes, with KSU ultimately claiming victory.
Georgia State, led by Zarique Nutter’s 20 points, is still reeling from recent losses, having lost three of their last four matchups. Coach Hayes expressed concern regarding his team’s defensive performance, emphasizing the need for improvement.
With both teams committed to continuing this exciting series, upcoming games promise to enhance the rivalry. KSU will next head to California, while Georgia State prepares for its upcoming game against Charlotte.
