Five years after the fire, Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral reopens grandly, rising from the ashes

Ulrich, the archbishop, will knock on the doors of the Notre-Dame three times with a staff made from charred wood salvaged from the cathedral’s fire. The doors will open to a rising tide of choir song and the thunderous sound of the organ, which has been painstakingly restored. The cathedral now has a new altar, a golden cross, and modern fire doors and sprinklers. The crown of thorns, a sacred relic, will be displayed in a sparkling reliquary. The mayor of Paris Center, Ariel Weil, expressed relief that a page has been turned on this tragic chapter in the building’s history.

On the night of the fire, Weil, along with thousands of Parisians and tourists, watched helplessly as the flames engulfed the cathedral. Emily MacKinnon, a self-described Notre-Dame superfan, felt that it was the worst day of her life but is grateful that the restoration efforts have saved much of the cathedral. MacKinnon, who has a deep connection with Notre-Dame since childhood, plans to attend the opening ceremony and is filled with gratitude for the restoration. She has collected over a thousand pieces of Notre-Dame memorabilia and runs her own tour company around the cathedral. Notre-Dame has been a central part of her life, from writing school projects about it to seeing the musical “Notre-Dame de Paris” on stage.
