Rural Georgia counties surpass Democrat strongholds in early voting as Peach State breaks records

Rural Georgians are voting early at a higher rate compared to residents in Democratic-leaning counties, according to recent data. The top 23 counties for absentee and early in-person voter turnout were won by former President Trump in 2020. Rural areas like Towns, Oconee, and Rabun have seen high voter turnout, outpacing the state average by 15% in some cases.

On the other hand, suburban blue-leaning counties like Cobb and Gwinnett, as well as Democratic stronghold Fulton County, have seen lower early voting rates. Despite this, Fulton County has had the highest number of early in-person ballots cast, followed by Gwinnett and Cobb counties. In contrast, Towns County has had significantly lower voter turnout during the early voting period.

This increase in early voting in rural areas could indicate enthusiasm among the Republican base, potentially changing the traditional narrative that early voting favors Democrats. Analysts note that while some rural red counties are matching their total 2020 turnout, it does not necessarily predict the final outcome of the election.

Both former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have invested resources in Georgia, highlighting the importance of the state in the political landscape. As the election approaches, it’s clear that both parties have work to do to turn out their respective voters in the final days leading up to the election.
