Young Hunter’s Memorable Pursuit of “Hollywood” Buck
Taylor County, October 2023 – In what can only be described as an unforgettable hunting experience, Charlie Mathis, an aspiring young hunter, embarked on a challenging yet rewarding quest to tag a buck affectionately known as “Hollywood.” Over the summer, Hollywood became a regular on Charlie’s hunting grounds, but as the bow season progressed, sightings dwindled.
Undeterred, Charlie and his mentor strategically repositioned their hunting blind in hopes of better visibility while avoiding spooking the deer. Unfortunately, their initial attempts resulted in startling the local deer population, including a smaller 8-point buck that Charlie almost shot. A persistent Charlie was determination itself, moving the blind again after encountering difficulty.
After attending a pheasant shoot in South Georgia, where Charlie won a new box stand, the duo set it up at the opposite end of their food plot, planning to hunt for three evenings. The first two nights proved unfruitful, but the third brought promise when Hollywood emerged at 9:30 AM, feeding calmly in the plot.
As a school assignment momentarily distracted Charlie, he dozed off before being alerted to Hollywood’s presence. A thrilling six-minute standoff ensued before Charlie seized the opportunity to take the shot, witnessing the buck mule-kick away.
Though initial tracking proved challenging, with the deer leading them on a 3.91-mile chase, they finally retrieved Hollywood shortly after 1 AM. The rewarding moment culminated with Charlie taking the prized buck to school the next day for photos.
