Trump Seeks Dismissal of Georgia Election Interference Charges Ahead of Inauguration

Atlanta, GA – President-elect Donald Trump is pushing for a Georgia court to dismiss criminal charges related to alleged interference in the 2020 election, prior to his upcoming inauguration on January 20. In a recent court filing, Trump’s attorney, Steve Sadow, requested the Georgia Court of Appeals to dismiss the pending charges against Trump and 14 co-defendants accused of conspiring to overturn the election results.

The legal team argues that criminal charges against a sitting president are unconstitutional. Trump’s case has been largely stagnant in recent months, but his victory in securing Georgia’s 16 electoral votes last month has reignited his legal strategy. Federal courts have previously dismissed other criminal cases against Trump, citing legal immunity for sitting presidents, a stance reinforced by a recent Supreme Court ruling.

Sadow contends that ongoing litigation against Trump undermines his ability to fulfill presidential duties and reflects political bias from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who is leading the prosecution. He accuses Willis of acting against the will of Georgia voters demonstrated in the recent election.

Additionally, the Georgia court recently postponed a hearing regarding appeals from Trump and other co-defendants to remove Willis from the case, alleging misconduct due to her past relationship with a former special prosecutor involved in the investigation.

The legal situation grows more complicated as ex-Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro, who pleaded guilty in the election interference case, requested the reversal of his conviction based on a ruling that the court lacked jurisdiction over certain charges.

As the clock ticks down to Trump’s inauguration, the outcomes of these legal challenges remain crucial in shaping the political landscape.
