Tennessee Senator Ken Yager Arrested for DUI and Hit-and-Run Charges
Jekyll Island, GA – Tennessee State Senator Ken Yager (R-District 12), recently reelected as the Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus, was arrested Tuesday evening by the Georgia State Patrol on multiple charges, including DUI, hit-and-run, and failure to stop at a stop sign. Law enforcement was alerted to Yager’s vehicle, identified by its state-issued plates, after it was involved in a hit-and-run incident in the popular tourist area.
Troopers found Yager at the Jekyll Market parking lot, where he was being treated for injuries from a fall. During their interaction, officers noted a strong odor of alcohol on Yager’s breath. He acknowledged his involvement in the crash but claimed he was unaware that law enforcement was on-site. Although he consented to a breathalyzer test, Yager refused a blood test. Body camera footage indicated signs of impairment, as he struggled with field sobriety tests.
Following his arrest, Yager posted bail of $2,117.70 and was released early Wednesday morning. The investigation remains active, and details regarding a future court date have yet to be disclosed. In a statement, Yager referred to the incident as "unfortunate" and expressed his willingness to cooperate with authorities.
With the charges pending, Yager faces potential repercussions within the Tennessee Senate, including a mandatory resignation from his leadership post if indicted. This incident marks the senator’s first arrest but adds to a history of questionable decisions that have raised concerns about his leadership.
Yager has previously faced scrutiny for his legislative decisions, including abstaining from voting on key health and abortion bills. His arrest has drawn attention to his past actions and may further tarnish his reputation within the Tennessee political landscape.
