Every year since 1995, Erik Pauze has been tasked with finding the perfect tree for Rockefeller Center’s plaza. The tree must be a Norway spruce that is at least 70 feet tall and 40 to 42 feet wide, big and stable enough to support wires, cables, lights, and a star. Pauze looks for a tree with a beautiful shape, fullness, and vibrant green color. He spends every day thinking about future trees and starts the search early, with this year’s tree being found in July 2020. Pauze came across the perfect tree while driving, knocked on the owner’s door, and was met with an immediate yes when he asked if he would consider donating it to Rockefeller Center. Over the decades, not much has changed in Pauze’s role, but each year’s process varies slightly. Pauze’s dedication and attention to detail in choosing the perfect tree for Rockefeller Center’s plaza have made him a crucial part of the holiday tradition at the iconic location.
