UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson did not travel with security, despite previous threats.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down in front of a New York City hotel without personal security, despite known threats against him. The masked gunman targeted him as he walked to a conference, waiting for other pedestrians to pass before opening fire. Thompson’s wife confirmed he had received threats, but he had not altered his travel routine. The insurance giant’s proxy statements indicate that no current or former executives receive company-funded personal security, unlike peers Humana and Cigna who provide personal security for executives. CVS Health requires its CEO to use corporate aircraft and a corporate driver for security purposes. Former FBI Supervisor Rob D’Amico believes the killing was a personal vendetta related to the victim’s company. Police in Thompson’s hometown of Maple Grove had not been notified of any threats against him and had only responded to a call regarding a possible intruder at his home in 2018. The investigation is ongoing, and Maple Grove police have offered assistance to the NYPD. Thompson’s killing highlights the vulnerability of high-ranking business figures despite available information on the internet that could potentially be used to locate them.
