Opposition lawmakers in South Korea have moved to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after he declared martial law but lifted the order under intense pressure. The Democratic Party, which controls the parliament, led the charge, submitting articles of impeachment against Yoon. The motion requires a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature to pass, with voting expected to take place soon.
Impeachment proceedings will also be initiated against Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, among others, with charges of insurrection being filed. Yoon’s People Power Party expressed regret over the martial law declaration, calling it a move that nearly paralyzed the nation.
The South Korean government rushed to reassure citizens after the brief period of martial law, with the Prime Minister taking responsibility for the situation. The U.S. Secretary of State welcomed the decision to rescind martial law and emphasized the importance of resolving political disagreements peacefully.
Yoon’s approval ratings have been dropping, leading to tensions with the opposition Democratic Party. Yoon’s surprise martial law announcement accused the opposition of paralyzing the government and sought to protect the constitutional order and combat pro-North Korea groups.
The martial law proclamation banned political activities, media operations, and declared striking doctors to return to work. Lawmakers nullified Yoon’s declaration, prompting the lifting of martial law. The incident marked the first time martial law had been declared since 1980 in a country that has transitioned into a vibrant democracy.
