Eastern Oregon University (EOU) has been awarded over $1.5 million in grants to enhance technology-focused workforce development in rural eastern Oregon. The grants will focus on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and technical skill-building in underserved communities.
The first grant, totaling $1,142,977, will support the EOU Acquisition of Computer and Technical Skills (EOU-ACTS) project, providing cybersecurity training and internships for students. The second grant, totaling $444,999, will expand the Greater Oregon Science Technology and Math (GO STEM) Mobile Maker Lab Effort, aiming to deliver technology lessons and educator training across seven rural counties in Eastern Oregon.
These initiatives will help prepare students for careers in technology and build a pipeline of talent to support local industries. EOU President Kelly Ryan expressed gratitude for the resources, emphasizing the university’s commitment to empowering graduates for success in the workforce.
Stephanie Holloway, GO STEM program director, highlighted the importance of expanding technology education in rural communities and sparking interest in STEM careers. The grants will also facilitate educator professional development and the integration of AI skills into classroom instruction.
Peter Geissinger, EOU’s provost, stressed the significance of equipping students with practical IT and AI skills, noting that the grants will provide hands-on training and career preparation opportunities.
