Voter Turnout High in Local Runoff Elections Despite Holiday Season
With the holiday season underway, many candidates faced concerns about voter turnout for Tuesday’s local runoff races. However, poll closures at 7 p.m. revealed that voters turned out in strong numbers, showcasing civic engagement in the face of seasonal distractions.
In Atlanta’s City Council Post 3 special election, Eshé Collins, an Atlanta native and current Board of Education member, is competing against Dr. Nicole Evans Jones, an entrepreneur and former Atlanta Public Schools leader. Collins is backed by civic leaders like state Rep. Jason Esteves, while Jones received endorsements from former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and Ambassador Andrew Young.
DeKalb County also featured competitive races. Nicole Massiah is projected to defeat Andrew Bell for County Commission District 3, while Dr. LaDena Bolton is expected to win against Jacqueline Adams for District 7. Both Massiah and Bolton boast extensive backgrounds in law and business.
In Doraville, a key race between Taylor Ray and Andy Yeoman is anticipated, with Ray, a planning commission secretary, leading in projections. In East Point, Shean Atkins is set to take Ward B at-large, bringing with him two decades of experience in urban planning.
Further down the ballot, Gwinnett County’s Doug Ingram is projected to defeat Michele Sims for Mulberry City Council, and Michael Price is expected to retain his role as District 4 Commissioner in Henry County against Vivian Thomas.
Despite initial concerns regarding voter engagement during the festive season, the strong turnout indicates a commitment to local governance and the importance of civic participation. Results from these races will continue to shape the fabric of community leadership in the region.
