Cold Snap Hits Atlanta: Warming Centers Open Amid Frigid Conditions
ATLANTA, GA – As the Atlanta area braces for a significant drop in temperatures, authorities are urging residents to take precautions while navigating the icy conditions. Although metro Atlanta experienced morning temperatures in the 30s on Tuesday, the wind chill made it feel closer to the 20s, leading to a chilly atmosphere that extended into the Blue Ridge Mountains, where flurries dusted the area overnight.
Due to the frigid temperatures, schools in Union and Fannin counties delayed their opening by two hours, while the National Weather Service reported that temperatures are about 10 to 20 degrees below the averages for this time of year. Wednesday is expected to offer little relief, with highs reaching only the low 50s.
Mayor Andre Dickens highlighted the city’s response to the cold by announcing the opening of low-barrier warming centers to accommodate vulnerable individuals. These centers are equipped to serve meals and provide resources to those in need. Similarly, several warming stations across the metro area in DeKalb and Gwinnett counties will open to help residents cope with the freezing conditions.
Additionally, Atlanta’s Department of Transportation is deploying brine trucks to work against icy road surfaces, and drivers are being advised to exercise caution while traveling. Fire Rescue Chief Rod Smith also cautioned against fire hazards related to heating sources, encouraging residents to keep their Christmas trees hydrated and check their lights for safety.
As temperatures are predicted to fall further, residents are urged to bundle up and stay informed about local resources available during this cold snap.
