Republican Senators Disregard Misconduct Accusations Following Pete Hegseth Meeting

Republican senators, including Sen. Cynthia Lummis and Sen. Rick Scott, met with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, and shrugged off sexual assault and misconduct allegations against him. Lummis called the allegations a “side issue” and praised Hegseth’s leadership abilities. Around 10 to 12 conservative senators met with Hegseth behind closed doors for less than an hour, showing their support for him despite the allegations. The allegations included claims of intoxication on the job, sexual assault, and being a “wild child,” all of which Hegseth has denied. Senators expressed confidence in Hegseth’s vision for the Pentagon, downplaying the accusations and emphasizing his commitment to a strong military. Ted Cruz criticized the media’s focus on the allegations and suggested that each Cabinet nominee should undergo a background check, potentially not conducted by the FBI as usual.

Despite controversial remarks by Hegseth in the past regarding women serving in combat roles, some senators defended his ability to increase retention and recruitment levels in the military. The Trump transition team came out in support of Hegseth, dismissing the allegations as an attempt to discredit him. While some allegations remain unresolved, Hegseth’s attorney declined to comment on the matter. Overall, Republican senators expressed unwavering support for Hegseth, highlighting his potential to lead the Defense Department effectively.
