Bryce Berry: A New Voice in Georgia Politics
Bryce Berry, a dynamic 23-year-old educator and community organizer, has been elected to serve in Georgia’s House of Representatives, marking a significant milestone as one of the youngest lawmakers in state history. A seventh-grade math teacher in southwest Atlanta, Berry garnered 84% of the vote in his recent victory against incumbent Republican Mesha K. Mainor in District 56.
For Berry, his role as a teacher has profoundly influenced his legislative ambitions. His campaign was driven by the challenges faced by his students, including issues like family eviction and exposure to violence, which he identifies as direct consequences of state policy. “They’re my North Star for literally everything I do,” he notes.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Berry became involved in activism after witnessing systemic injustice, particularly following the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson. His prior experience as a legislative aide and president of the Young Democrats of Georgia equips him with a robust understanding of the political landscape.
As he prepares to take office in January, Berry emphasizes education as his top priority. He advocates for updating Georgia’s Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula, which has remained unchanged since 1985, arguing for a system that addresses the financial disparities affecting lower-income schools. He also seeks to raise the minimum teacher salary to $65,000 and enhance school infrastructure.
Berry is navigating the unique challenge of balancing his legislative duties with his teaching role, a feat unprecedented in Georgia. He remains hopeful that his students will see the importance of his new position, stating, “I would love to say my teacher was a state representative or something when I was a kid.” As he embarks on this new journey, mentors believe his insights as an educator and commitment to his community will bring valuable perspectives to the state legislature.
