Georgia Power’s Battery Energy Storage Plan Gains Approval from PSC
Atlanta, GA – In a significant move towards enhancing renewable energy infrastructure, the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) unanimously approved Georgia Power’s proposal to construct battery energy storage systems (BESS) at four strategic locations across the state. The decision, made on December 3rd, will add an impressive 500 megawatts of electrical generation capacity to Georgia Power’s portfolio, enough to power approximately 375,000 homes.
The project includes the establishment of two BESS facilities adjacent to Robins Air Force Base in Houston County and Moody Air Force Base in Lowndes County, both of which will be integrated with existing solar generation setups. Additionally, a third standalone facility is slated for the site of the retired coal-burning Plant Hammond in Floyd County, while the fourth installation will enhance the battery-storage capabilities at the ongoing McGrau Ford Battery Facility in Cherokee County.
This initiative aligns with Georgia Power’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and transition to more sustainable options. The PSC’s approval also follows a cooperative agreement with the Public Interest Advocacy Staff, which mandates that Georgia Power submit quarterly reports detailing spending and construction timelines for the BESS projects.
With the unanimous vote signaling strong support, the construction of these battery energy storage systems marks a crucial step in bolstering the state’s energy resilience, providing backup power, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources. Georgia Power aims to utilize this expanded capacity to meet increasing energy demands while promoting a cleaner energy future for the state.
