Boston Red Sox Focus on Pitching Improvements This Offseason
As the 2024 MLB season approaches, the Boston Red Sox are prioritizing pitching enhancements regardless of their efforts to sign New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto. Although the Red Sox are actively pursuing Soto, the team recognizes the necessity of strengthening its pitching lineup.
Current projections for the Red Sox starting rotation include Tanner Houck, Lucas Giolito, Kutter Crawford, and Brayan Bello. However, the team aims to secure at least one additional left-handed starting pitcher before Opening Day. Given the injuries that plagued their performance in 2023, the Red Sox could benefit from adding not just one, but possibly two pitchers to bolster their depth.
Among ideal targets are Max Fried and Walker Buehler. Fried, a left-handed ace, boasts a remarkable career ERA of 3.07 and is coming off an impressive 2024 season with a 3.25 ERA in 29 starts, earning him an All-Star selection. He is projected to command a six-year deal worth over $136 million this winter. Conversely, Buehler, who is returning from injuries, is expected to secure a one-year contract valued under $4 million. Despite a challenging regular season in 2024, his postseason performance—including a standout showing in the World Series—demonstrates his potential to return to form.
By acquiring both Fried and Buehler, the Red Sox would have the option to implement a six-man rotation or designate one of their current pitchers for bullpen duties, adding insurance against injuries. With the emphasis on acquiring high-quality pitching this offseason, the Red Sox can position themselves as a formidable contender in the upcoming season.
