Republican Senator Bill Hagerty asserts that entry to the U.S. economy is a ‘privilege’ in response to potential tariff actions by Trump.

Senator Bill Hagerty expressed his support for President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on imports from countries like Canada and Mexico, citing the U.S.’s history of using trade as a strategic tool. He emphasized that the U.S. needs to protect its economy and scrutinize nations that do not have its best interests at heart. Hagerty backed Trump’s tariff threats against Canada and Mexico, accusing them of letting drugs and undocumented individuals flood across the border.

However, Senator Chris Murphy criticized Trump’s use of tariffs, calling them a distraction and questioning their effectiveness in creating American jobs. Hagerty also gave his support to Trump’s controversial Cabinet picks, such as Kash Patel for the FBI and Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence, despite concerns from other senators.

Regarding Gabbard’s alleged ties to Assad and Russian propaganda, Hagerty said he plans to vote for her nomination, expressing his loyalty to Trump’s nominees even if he does not agree with all of their actions. Overall, Hagerty stood behind Trump’s aggressive trade policies and defended his administration’s choices for key positions in the government.
