Shooting Incident at Conyers Gas Station Under Investigation
CONYERS, Ga. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is probing a shooting incident involving the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) that occurred late Saturday night at a gas station in Conyers.
According to officials, the incident began just before midnight when GSP troopers attempted to stop two vehicles engaged in racing on Interstate 20. The chase ensued after the cars exited onto Sigman Road, with one of the vehicles pulling into a convenience store’s parking lot.
The GBI reported that the driver of the vehicle attempted to evade capture by maneuvering around gas pumps. During the altercation, the passenger of that vehicle, later identified as 41-year-old Chester Williams, exited and fired shots at the troopers. In response, the officers returned fire, striking Williams, who was subsequently arrested and transported to a hospital for medical attention.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle managed to escape initially but was later apprehended in the vicinity, not far from the gas station. Fortunately, injuries among the troopers were minimal, with one officer sustaining minor injuries during the incident.
This case marks a continuation of law enforcement’s challenging encounters on Georgia roads, underscored by the escalating nature of such pursuits. The investigation remains active as the GBI collects additional evidence and information regarding the incident.
