Republicans Prepare to Push ‘America First’ Agenda as Control of Congress Looms
WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders are rallying voters’ support for a conservative agenda as they anticipate unified control of the federal government starting in January. Speaker Mike Johnson declared that the election results demonstrate a public mandate for implementing an "America First" policy, emphasizing immediate action as Congress reconvenes in the new year. Johnson highlighted key issues that resonate with voters, such as securing borders, reducing living costs, restoring a strong international stance, and rejecting "wokeness" in schools and government.
Currently, the Republican Party has secured 214 House seats, just shy of the 218 needed for a majority, as totals are still pending in 16 races. Despite the slim margin, Johnson expressed confidence that the GOP will enter the next Congress with a stronger majority, although he acknowledged the importance of every vote given potential absences among members.
Johnson’s remarks came during a press conference outside the Capitol, where he indicated the party’s collaborative efforts with former President Donald Trump, who is expected to meet with GOP lawmakers this week to discuss legislative priorities. The upcoming House majority, combined with a Republican-controlled Senate, allows the party to utilize budget reconciliation processes to pass legislation with only a simple majority, avoiding the usual 60-vote threshold in the Senate.
While specific reform details remain under wraps, Johnson indicated that Republican leaders are in the process of building consensus and coordinating with the Trump administration. “There’s lots of ideas on the table,” Johnson said, urging the public to stay tuned for forthcoming revelations about their policy agenda.
