Austin Peay State University Men’s Basketball Triumphs Over Georgia State in Jacksonville Classic
Jacksonville, FL – In a strong performance, the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team defeated Georgia State 62-50 in their opening game of the Jacksonville Classic at Florida State College at Jacksonville Gymnasium on Tuesday. LJ Thomas led the charge with 25 points, marking his third consecutive 20-point game and his fourth in the last five outings. This impressive effort included 15 points in the second half, pushing Thomas’ career tally to just short of his 29-point record set earlier this season against Butler.
The game began with both teams trading three-pointers, but Austin Peay built momentum thanks to an 11-5 run initiated by Anton Brookshire’s three-pointer. The Governors held a slim 32-26 lead at halftime. Despite moments of pressure from Georgia State in the second half, including narrowing the gap to three points, Austin Peay’s defense proved pivotal, as they limited GSU to 0-for-5 from beyond the arc after halftime.
Tekao Carpenter contributed 12 points, while Anton Brookshire and freshman Tate McCubbin each added eight points. Notably, McCubbin’s eight points marked a career-best, showcasing the depth of the Governors’ bench.
Austin Peay’s victory improved their season record to 4-2 and marked their first win in Florida since 2022, breaking an eight-game losing streak in the Sunshine State. The team also boasts a favorable 4-0 record when leading at halftime.
The Governors will look to build on this success as they face UT Arlington on Wednesday at 4:00 PM CT, continuing their journey in the Jacksonville Classic. For ongoing updates, fans can follow APSU men’s basketball on social media platforms or visit LetsGoPeay.com.
