Police in Las Vegas arrested 57 striking casino workers at a protest outside Virgin Hotels Las Vegas organized by the Culinary Union. The workers had walked off their jobs in an attempt to secure a new five-year union pay contract. Images and videos posted by the union showed members blocking a road in front of the hotel and some union members being handcuffed by police. The union’s leadership, including President Diana Valles, were also arrested.
Las Vegas police stated that the road next to the casino, which had been closed due to the protests, had reopened after the arrests. The city was hosting the Formula One Grand Prix that weekend, adding to the significance of the demonstration. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas is owned by JC Hospitality, Juniper Capital Partners, Virgin Group, and others. The hotel did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
The protest highlights the ongoing struggle between labor and management in the hospitality industry, particularly in Las Vegas where workers are fighting for fair pay and better working conditions. The arrests demonstrate the dedication of the Culinary Union members to standing up for their rights and fighting for a contract that meets their needs.
