App State Volleyball Set for Sun Belt Tournament Quarterfinals Against Georgia State
BOONE, N.C. – The App State volleyball team is gearing up for its debut in the Sun Belt Tournament, facing No. 5 seed Georgia State on Friday at the Foley Event Center in Foley, Alabama, at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers concluded their regular season with a competitive finish, splitting matches against Troy. They started strong, securing a remarkable 3-2 victory where freshman Elise Marchal recorded a career-high 15 kills alongside impressive contributions from junior Maya Winterhoff and redshirt junior Addison Heidemann. However, they dropped their final match against Troy, despite senior Lulu Ambrose achieving her 1,000th career kill.
Marchal emerged as a standout player this season, earning Freshman of the Year honors and receiving Second Team All-SBC recognition. She leads App State in aces and ranks in the top three for digs, kills, and blocks. Winterhoff, awarded First Team All-SBC, tops the team in kills and ranks nationally for her hitting percentage.
Georgia State comes into the tournament fresh off a 3-2 victory over Troy. The Panthers are led by Keionna Mackey, who has recorded 338 kills this season, and Shanelle Martinez, who boasts a team-high 620 assists. This will be the teams’ first postseason meeting, with App State having won two previous matchups in the regular season.
The victor of the App State vs. Georgia State match will advance to the semifinals on Saturday, facing the winner of Texas State versus James Madison. With a blend of talent and determination, the Mountaineers are ready to prove their mettle in the tournament.
