Georgia State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver has announced proposed legislation in response to the shooting at Apalachee High School that would require owners of assault-type weapons in the state to obtain and maintain liability insurance for their firearms. The legislation, set to be introduced during the 2025 legislative session, aims to hold gun owners financially responsible for any damage or injury caused by their firearms. The proposed law defines assault weapons as semiautomatic rifles capable of accepting detachable high-capacity magazines and would require owners to carry a minimum of $1 million in liability insurance. This measure is seen as a way to encourage gun owners to be more mindful of the risks associated with owning such weapons and secure them properly. This legislation follows a shooting at the high school that resulted in the deaths of four people, including two students and two teachers. The House Speaker of Georgia, Jon Burns, has also expressed support for gun safety legislation, including incentives for safe storage and gun safety training. The proposed legislation will be formally introduced during the 2025 legislative session, which begins on Monday, Jan. 13.
